# Block or redirect by state, province or city

## Overview

Block or redirect shoppers from part of a country instead of the whole country: one or more states or provinces, and optionally a single city. Rules live in **Block & Re-director > Blacklist** under **Block location** or **Redirect location**, with **Select condition** set to **Province**.

## How to block or redirect a state, province or city?

**Step 1:** Open **Block & Re-director > Blacklist**, choose **Block** or **Redirect**, then click **Block location** or **Redirect location**.

**Step 2:** Set the status: **Enable** applies the rule as soon as you save, **Disable** stores it without applying it.

**Step 3:** For a redirect rule only, fill in **Redirect to** (an **External URL** or a **Shopify Market**) and **Displayed name (optional)**. See [Use a Shopify Market as your redirect destination](https://help.omegatheme.com/en/article/a-complete-guide-block-redirect-rules-1f1wr1i/).

**Step 4:** Under **Select condition**, pick **Province**, then:

1. **Select country**: the country the regions belong to.
2. Choose the mode: **Block specific provinces/states** or **Block all except**.
3. **Select state/province**: one or more regions. You can select several at once.
4. **Select city (optional)**: narrow a single region down to one city.
5. Add a private note if you want, then click **Save**.

## How it works?

| Mode | What it does | Example (country = Vietnam) |
|---|---|---|
| **Block specific provinces/states** | Blocks visitors from the selected regions; the rest of the country is unaffected | Select Hanoi: visitors from Hanoi are blocked, other Vietnamese visitors get in |
| **Block all except** | Blocks the whole country, then lets through only the selected regions | Select Hanoi: only visitors from Hanoi get in, everyone else in Vietnam is blocked |

| Important: selecting two or more regions in **Select state/province** greys out **Select city (optional)**. To target a city, keep a single region in the rule.

For a redirect rule, the same selection sends matching visitors to the destination in **Redirect to** instead of the blocking page.

## Who can use this feature?

**Block all except** is available on paid plans. **Block specific provinces/states** and the redirect equivalent are available on the **Premium** plan and above.

## FAQs

1. **Can I block several cities in one rule?**
No. City selection is only available when a single state/province is selected, and it takes one city. Create one rule per city, or block the whole region instead.

2. **I want to allow only one state in my country. Which mode do I use?**
**Block all except** with that state selected. Visitors from every other state in that country are blocked; visitors from other countries are not affected by this rule.

3. **Does this rule also block the rest of the world?**
No. A province rule only applies to visitors from the country you selected. To restrict other countries, add a **Country** rule.
