# Configure Content protection

## Overview

**Content protection** stops visitors from copying your store's text and images, saving your pages, taking them with keyboard shortcuts, or opening the browser's developer tools (a hidden panel that shows and copies a page's code). It lives in **Settings > Content protection**, where you choose who it applies to and turn on only the protections you need.

## Requirement

| The Blockify app embed must be turned on in your theme, otherwise the protections do not work on your store. See [Activate Blockify and the app embed](https://help.omegatheme.com/en/article/activate-blockify-and-the-app-embed-1fpxtye/).

## How to enable Content protection?

### Step 1: Choose who the protection applies to

Go to **Settings > Content protection**. At the top, **Apply content protection to** decides which visitors the protections below cover. Blockify saves your choice as soon as you pick it, and it covers all four protections together.

| Option | Who is protected |
|---|---|
| **All visitors** | Everyone who views your store, including visitors allowed by a whitelist rule. Default for new stores. |
| **Only visitors that are not whitelisted** | Visitors let in by a whitelist rule with **Whitelist if these accesses use VPN** ticked can still copy your content. |

| Note: This choice never changes who can enter your store; it only decides whether a whitelisted visitor can copy your content. If your store already let whitelisted visitors copy content, Blockify set it to **Only visitors that are not whitelisted** for you and shows a banner with **Switch to all visitors**. Nothing changes until you switch.

### Step 2: Turn on the protections you need

Each card has its own switch, and Blockify saves it as soon as you flip it.

| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| **Protect content** | Visitors cannot select (highlight) text or drag images on your store. |
| **Deactivate right click** | The right-click menu does not open, so "Copy", "Save image as…" and "Inspect" are not available. |
| **Deactivate shortcut** | Turns off keyboard shortcuts for copying, saving, inspecting or screenshotting the page, group by group (Step 3). |
| **Deactivate inspect** | Visitors cannot open the browser's developer tools, not even from the browser menu. |

### Step 3: Choose the shortcut groups

When **Deactivate shortcut** is on, its card lists four shortcut groups, each with a checkbox and the keys it covers. Hover the info icon next to a group name to see what it stops. Tick the groups you want Blockify to deactivate and untick the ones that get in shoppers' way; Blockify saves each tick as soon as you click it.

| Group | Shortcuts deactivated |
|---|---|
| **Copy and select content** | `Ctrl/Cmd + C`, `Ctrl/Cmd + X`, `Ctrl/Cmd + A` |
| **Save page** | `Ctrl/Cmd + S` |
| **Developer tools and view source** | `F12`, `Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + I / J / C`, `Cmd + Option + I / J / C`, `Ctrl + U`, `Cmd + Option + U` |
| **Screenshot capture** | `PrintScreen`, `Win + Shift + S`, `Win + G`, `Win + Alt + PrintScreen`, `Cmd + Shift + 3 / 4 / 5`, `Ctrl + Shift + S` (Firefox) |

| Tip: Screenshot keys belong to the computer itself (Windows or macOS), not to your store page, so **Screenshot capture** cannot stop every screenshot: Blockify hides the page while the key is pressed, but the screenshot may not come out blank. Unticking the group always works and lets shoppers screenshot a product to send to your support team.

## How it works?

* **Deactivate shortcut** is the main switch: when it is off, no group works; when it is on, only the groups you ticked work. If **Deactivate shortcut** was already on in your store before the groups were added, all four groups stay ticked.
* With the **Developer tools and view source** group unticked but **Deactivate inspect** on, the developer tools are still blocked when opened from the browser menu. Turn **Deactivate inspect** off too if you want them to open.
* Changes work from the next visit; a page that is already open works the old way until the visitor reloads it.
* Content protection does not run in the Shopify theme editor or on a theme preview link.
* **Deactivate inspect** never applies to Googlebot, Bingbot and Lighthouse (Google's page speed check), so your Google ranking and speed reports are not affected.

| Tip: If a visitor opens the developer tools before the page has finished loading, they see the blocking page as soon as Blockify starts working on the page.

## Who can use this feature?

* **Protect content** — available on the **Premium** plan and above.
* **Deactivate right click**, **Deactivate shortcut** (with its groups) and **Deactivate inspect** — available on the **Enterprise** and **Shopify Plus** plans.

**Apply content protection to** is visible on all plans. If you move to a lower plan, the protections switch off, but Blockify keeps your **Apply content protection to** and group choices.

## FAQs

1. **I turned on Protect content but a visitor can still copy my text.**

Check that the app embed is turned on in your theme, the **Protect content** switch is on, and **Apply content protection to** is **All visitors** if that visitor matches a whitelist rule.

2. **I unticked a shortcut group but shoppers say the shortcut is still blocked.**

Your theme may still use an older version of the Blockify app embed. Update it in the theme editor and ask the shopper to reload the page.

3. **Can I let my own staff copy content?**

Whitelist their IP address with **Whitelist if these accesses use VPN** ticked and set **Apply content protection to** to **Only visitors that are not whitelisted**. There is no separate staff exception.
