## How Upsell Add-ons works

You pick one or more **main products** and a list of **add-on products**. When a shopper views a main product, the add-ons appear under it as a checklist. Every add-on the shopper ticks goes into the cart with the main product, at the discounted price.

Example: sell a suitcase and give 10% off a sleep mask or a travel pillow.

How the discount works:

* It applies **only to add-on products**. The main product keeps its normal price.
* It applies only while **a main product is in the cart**. If the shopper removes the main product, the add-ons go back to full price.
* **Every add-on product gets the same discount value.**
* It combines with your other product, order and shipping discounts.

## Before you start

* Upsell Add-ons is available from the **Basic plan** up. It isn't available on the Free plan.
* The number of campaigns you can run at the same time depends on your plan.
* The main products must be **specific products**. You can't use collections or "All products".

## How to create an Upsell Add-ons campaign
1. In the Pareto app, go to **Campaigns** and click **Create campaign**.
2. Choose the **Upsell Add-ons** template.

1. In the **Rule settings** tab, enter a **Campaign name**. It must be unique, and only you see it in the app.
2. Optional: enter a **Display name**. Shoppers see it in the cart and at checkout when the discount applies. If you leave it empty, the campaign name is used.
3. In **Main products**, search for or **Browse** the products that should show the add-ons.
4. In **Add-ons products**, search for or **Browse** the products to offer as add-ons. In the picker, select only the variants you want to discount.
5. Under **Discount value**, choose the discount type and enter a value:
* **%**: a percentage off each add-on unit (maximum 100).
* **Amount off each**: a fixed amount off each add-on unit.
* **Free**: the add-ons are free. No value is needed.
8. Optional: change the **Min Qty** and **Max Qty** for each add-on (see the next section).
9. Click **Save**, then click **Turn on** under **Campaign status**.

## Set the minimum and maximum quantity for each add-on

Each add-on in the list has two fields:

* **Min Qty**: the lowest quantity of this add-on that gets the discount. It is also the starting quantity on the widget. The default is 1.
* **Max Qty**: the highest number of units that get the discount. **0 means no limit.**

Things to know:

* Min and Max apply to each variant separately.
* Units above Max are charged at full price.
* If Max is lower than Min, the app resets Max to 0 (no limit) when you save.
* One main product in the cart unlocks the discount on up to Max units of **each** add-on. The discount isn't matched 1 to 1 with the number of main products, so set Max if you want to cap it.

You can drag the add-ons to change the order they appear in on the storefront.

## Advanced rule settings

Four optional cards sit below the discount settings:

| Setting | What it does | Default |
| ---- |
| **Apply to countries** | Limits the discount to shoppers in the countries or regions you choose. Available on the Advanced plan. | All countries |
| **Target customer** | Limits the discount by customer type, for example logged-in customers, B2B or D2C customers, or customers with specific tags. | Everyone |
| **Schedule** | Sets a start date and time, and optionally an end date and time, in the timezone you choose. Available from the Basic plan. | No schedule |
| **Maximum discount uses** | Caps total uses or uses per customer, per day, month, year or lifetime. This needs the **Pareto Limit** app. | No limit |

## Customize the display

Open the **Display settings** tab to change how the add-ons look:

* **Campaign details**: show or hide the campaign name above the add-ons, and set its text, size and color. You can use `{campaign_name}` or `{display_name}`.
* **Layout settings**: turn on or off **Show original price**, **Show select variant** and **Show quantity input**.
* **Notice in cart**: the message shown in the cart about the add-on offer.
* **Pop-up suggestions**: choose whether the add-ons pop-up in the cart opens automatically, and edit its header, description, discount badge (`{{discount}}`) and button text.
* **Advanced settings**: choose between visual swatches and a dropdown list for variants, turn on price rounding, hide the offer when the main product variant is out of stock, or hide the offer on the product page.

Use the **Checkout upsell** tab to set up the **Pareto - Upsell Add Ons** block. It suggests add-ons that aren't in the cart yet on the checkout, thank you and order status pages. To show it, add the block in the Shopify checkout editor.

## What shoppers see on your store

**Product page**

1. On a main product's page, the add-ons appear above the add to cart button.
2. Each add-on shows a checkbox, image, title, variant picker, quantity (if enabled) and the discounted price. The original price is crossed out.
3. All checkboxes start unticked, so the shopper chooses which add-ons to take.
4. When the shopper clicks the theme's **Add to cart** button, the main product and every ticked add-on go into the cart together.

**Cart**

* The cart notice and cart recommendation remind shoppers about add-ons they haven't added yet, showing the discounted price.
* The pop-up lists the add-ons with checkboxes, the number of selected items and the amount saved. Clicking the button adds the ticked add-ons and opens the cart page.

## FAQ

**Why isn't the add-on discount applied in the cart?**
Check that:
* a main product is in the cart
* the add-on variant is one you selected in the campaign
* the add-on quantity is at least **Min Qty**
* the shopper matches the country and customer targeting.

**Can I set a different discount for each add-on?**
Not in a single campaign. Every add-on shares one discount value. To use different discounts, create a separate campaign for each.

**Can I use a collection as the main product?**
No. Main products must be specific products.

**The same product is both a main product and an add-on. What happens?**
One unit is counted as the main product and isn't discounted. The other units get the add-on discount.

**Can I hide the widget and only use the checkout block?**
Yes. Turn on **Hide this offer on product page** in Display settings > Advanced settings.
