A complete guide: Multi-market tracking

If you sell in more than one region through Shopify Markets, you've probably run into the classic tracking problem: every market's events land in the same pixel, so your Japanese, Korean, and US data all blend into one account and no ad platform gets clean regional numbers. Multi-market Tracking solves this. It lets you route tracking events to a different destination per Shopify Market — each market gets its own pixel or dataset, with separate configs and clean attribution per region, all managed from one place. This guide explains how to turn the feature on, assign markets to your pixels, read the coverage warnings, and avoid the most common pitfall — losing events from markets that haven't been assigned to any pixel.

What you will learn

What is Multi-Market Tracking?

Normally, every pixel you connect in TagFly receives events from your whole store, regardless of where the shopper is buying from. That's fine with one market — but once you sell in several, running one ad account per region means each regional team sees everyone's data mixed together.
With Multi-market Tracking turned on, you assign each pixel of a channel to one or more Shopify Markets. From then on, events from a market are sent only to the pixel assigned to that market — Japanese orders go to your Japanese dataset, Korean orders to the Korean one, and nothing gets mixed.

A few things to know up front:

  • Your markets are synced automatically from Shopify Markets — you don't create or edit markets inside TagFly.
  • Multi-market routing works on channels that support multiple pixels: Facebook, Google Analytics 4, Google Ads, TikTok, Pinterest, and Snapchat.
  • Assignments are per channel. You can set up multi-market routing on Facebook first and add other channels later.

Before you start: what you need

  • At least 2 markets in Shopify Markets. Stores with a single market don't see the setup entry — instead you'll see an "Adding more markets soon? TagFly is ready" card, and you can contact support to learn more before you expand.
  • At least 2 pixels connected on a channel. A channel with fewer than 2 pixels isn't eligible for multi-market routing (there would be nothing to route between) and appears greyed out.
  • The Grow plan. Multi-market Tracking is available on the Grow plan.

TagFly reads your market list through Shopify's markets permission. If you installed TagFly before this feature existed, you'll be asked to approve the updated "view Shopify Markets" permission the first time you open Multi-market Tracking — accept it so TagFly can read your market list.

How to turn on Multi-market Tracking

Step 1: Go to Home or Tracking Configurations

Step 2: Click "Set up tracking per market". This opens the Multi-market Tracking setup screen.

If TagFly asks you to approve the updated Shopify permission to view your markets, accept it. The Multi-market Tracking setup screen opens — the subtitle is a good summary of how it works: "Markets are synced from Shopify Markets. Multi-market routing is available for channels that support multiple pixels."

Step 3: Click "Turn On".

After turning on the feature, you'll then see the screen below:

Only one market found? If your store has fewer than 2 active markets, the setup screen shows the "Only one market found" state instead. Click Add market to jump straight to Shopify Markets and create one, or Contact support to open the in-app chat and get our team's help. Once your store has a second active market, come back and continue from here.

Channel status

The left side of the setup screen lists every channel that supports multiple pixels. Each channel has a status dot:

  • Active (green) — multi-market routing is configured and saved for this channel. Its pixels have markets assigned.
  • Inactive (grey) — the channel is eligible (2+ pixels connected) but you haven't configured its market assignments yet. The channel keeps tracking as usual until you do.
  • Greyed out (not clickable) — the channel has fewer than 2 pixels connected, so it isn't eligible yet. Hovering shows the tooltip "Connect at least 2 pixels to track multi-market". Connect another pixel on that channel to unlock it.
Select a channel to open its market assignment panel. You can also click through to the destination's own settings when you need to add or manage its pixels first.

How to assign markets to your pixels

Selecting a channel opens its assignment panel: "Select which Shopify markets' data you would like to send to:", followed by a two-column table. Each row is one pixel of the channel:

  • The first column is the pixel's identifier. Its name follows the channel — Dataset ID for Facebook, Customer ID for Google Ads, Measurement ID for GA4, and the Pixel ID for TikTok, Pinterest, and Snapchat.
  • The second column, Target Market, is a multi-select dropdown of your Shopify Markets (it reads "Select here" until you choose).

Two simple rules govern the assignment:

  • One pixel can serve many markets.
  • Each market belongs to exactly one pixel per channel. Once a market is assigned, it appears with an "in use" label in the other pixels' dropdowns and can't be selected again — this is what prevents duplicated data.

Click Save to apply the channel's assignments. If any pixel still has no Target Market selected, each empty dropdown is outlined in red with the inline error "This field is required" — assign a market to every pixel, or remove/turn off the pixels you don't need, then save again.

Plan the mapping before you start: list your markets, list your ad accounts per region, and decide which pixel should own which market. The dropdown's "in use" locking will then simply confirm your plan instead of fighting it.

Market coverage and the two warning banners

The coverage summary on the assignment panel shows two boxes that update in real time as you assign markets:

  • Tracked [n] — markets already assigned to a pixel. Before you assign anything it shows "No markets assigned yet."
  • Not Tracked [n] — markets no pixel is receiving yet. When it reaches zero you'll see "All markets are covered".

Two orange banners warn you about the situations worth fixing:

  1. Unassigned markets (missed data). As long as at least one market is Not Tracked, TagFly shows: "Events from markets that aren't assigned to a Dataset ID will be missed. Please make sure every market is assigned so no data is lost." There is no default pixel catching leftover markets — an unassigned market's events are simply not sent for that channel. The banner disappears once every market is covered.

  1. Spare pixels with nothing to assign. If you have more pixels than markets — every market is already in use but some pixels still have none — TagFly shows: "Some pixels have no market to assign — all markets are already in use. Turn off or remove the unassigned pixels to activate multi-market tracking for this channel."

Assigning markets while setting up a pixel

You don't have to come back to the Multi-market screen every time you add a pixel. Once a channel has multi-market routing active, its pixel setup (Dataset Settings) shows a Target market(s) card with the same market dropdown, plus a Market coverage block (Tracked / Not Tracked and an "Edit" link back to the full setup).

  • A new pixel created after the channel went multi-market starts with an empty Target market — choose its market(s) as part of the setup.

  • An existing pixel that already has markets assigned shows them pre-filled, and the coverage block reflects your current state.

Channels that haven't activated multi-market don't show this card at all.

How to see your tracking data by market

Once multi-market routing is on, the market dimension shows up across TagFly:

  • Destination list filter. On Tracking Management, a Market filter appears next to the Destinations filter, so you can quickly see which destinations serve which market. (The filter only appears while Multi-market Tracking is On.)
  • Server-side event report. In Channel breakdown, a Markets filter lists each market with its pixel ID
  • Real-time dashboard. The event breakdown table gains a Market column between Destination and Status, showing a badge with the market each destination is assigned to
Destinations without multi-market routing show "-". The info icon in the Destination details header explains the same: "'-' means multi-market tracking isn't turned on for this destination. A badge shows the Shopify Market it's assigned to."

How to turn the feature off

Click Turn Off on the Multi-market Tracking setup screen. If you have at least one Active channel, TagFly asks you to confirm: "Turn off Multi-market Tracking? Your destinations will stop sending market-specific events. Market assignments are saved and restored when you turn it back on."
Two things worth knowing:

  • Your assignments are not deleted. They're saved and restored exactly as they were when you turn the feature back on — no re-setup.
  • After turning off, destinations return to normal (non-market-specific) tracking, and market-related UI such as the Market filter and Market column is hidden.

If you turn the feature off before ever configuring anything, TagFly skips the confirmation — there's nothing to lose yet.

Common use cases

  • One ad account per region — route Japan to the Japanese Dataset ID and Korea to the Korean one, so each regional ad account optimizes on its own conversions and ROAS stays meaningful per region.
  • Regional agencies — each agency's pixel receives only the markets they manage, without seeing (or polluting) other regions' data.
  • Market clusters — assign a group of markets (say, your EU countries) to one shared pixel and keep a separate pixel for your domestic market.
  • Expanding into a new region — add the market in Shopify, connect the region's pixel, assign the market, and the new region starts life with clean, separate attribution.

Best practices

  • Cover every market before you leave the page. Aim for Not Tracked = 0 ("All markets are covered") on every Active channel — any market left unassigned is losing events for that channel.
  • Don't keep spare pixels hanging. If a pixel has no market to own, turn it off or remove it — the channel's multi-market setup isn't complete while unassigned pixels remain.
  • Re-check TagFly whenever you add a market in Shopify. New markets arrive as Not Tracked; assigning them should be part of the launch routine for every new region.
  • Verify after saving. Open the Real-time dashboard and check the Market column, or filter the Channel breakdown report by market, to confirm events are reaching the right pixel. Pixel health will also flag unassigned markets.

Frequently asked questions

  1. Why do I see "Only one market found" when I open Multi-market Tracking?

Your store currently has fewer than 2 active markets in Shopify Markets, and the feature needs at least 2 to route between. Click "Add market" to create another market in Shopify Markets — or "Contact support" if you'd like our team to guide you — then come back. TagFly syncs your markets from Shopify automatically.

  1. Why is a channel greyed out in the channel list?

It has fewer than 2 pixels connected, so there's nothing to route between. Connect at least 2 pixels on that channel and it becomes selectable.

  1. Can one pixel receive several markets?

Yes — the relationship is one-to-many. A single Dataset ID can be the target for Japan and Korea at once, for example.

  1. Can I assign the same market to two pixels in the same channel?

No. Each market belongs to exactly one pixel per channel — once assigned, the market shows as "in use" and is disabled in the other pixels' dropdowns. This is deliberate: it prevents the same event being counted twice in two ad accounts.

  1. What happens to events from a market I haven't assigned?

They are missed for that channel. There is no default pixel that catches unassigned markets, which is why the orange warning banner and the Pixel health error stay visible until every market is covered.

  1. I added a new market in Shopify. Do I need to do anything in TagFly?

Yes — assign it. The market syncs into TagFly automatically but arrives as Not Tracked, and its events aren't sent until you assign it to a pixel on each multi-market channel.

  1. Will I lose my setup if I turn the feature off?

No. Market assignments are saved when you turn the feature off and restored when you turn it back on — no re-setup needed.

  1. Which channels support Multi-market Tracking?

The destinations that support multiple pixels: Facebook, Google Analytics 4, Google Ads, TikTok, Pinterest, and Snapchat. Each channel is configured independently.

  1. I removed a market from Shopify Markets while it was assigned to a pixel. What happens?

TagFly detects the change automatically. The affected channel drops to Inactive and shows an alert: "One or more markets assigned to this channel have been removed from Shopify Markets. Please reassign your configuration to active markets to resume tracking." The pixel that was pointing at the removed market has its Target Market cleared and is flagged "Please reassign market(s)". Assign an active market to that pixel — or turn off/remove the pixel if there's no market left for it — and save to resume market tracking on the channel.

  1. Can I turn an individual pixel on or off while Multi-market Tracking is active?

Yes — TagFly just asks you to confirm, because the pixel is tied to specific markets.

  • When you turn a pixel off, it stops collecting events from the market(s) it's assigned to, and its market assignment is cleared — events from those markets won't be sent to this pixel anymore, so reassign them to another pixel if you want to keep tracking them on that channel.
  • When you turn the pixel back on later, TagFly asks you to select its market(s) again before it can be switched on: from then on, the pixel only collects events from customers in the selected market(s), and events from your other markets won't be sent to it. You can change the selection anytime in the destination settings.
