Fraud filter
Overview
The Fraud Filter is an advanced security feature designed to automatically manage and mitigate risk by taking action on orders that Shopify's system flags as potentially fraudulent. Its primary purpose is to help you block fraudulent transactions, reduce chargebacks, and protect your revenue with minimal manual intervention.
How to Enable and Configure the Fraud Filter
Follow these steps to activate and set up the filter:
- From your Shopify Admin, navigate to Apps and open the Blockify app.
- In the app's sidebar, click on Fraud Filters.
- You will see the main toggle for the feature. Click the "Turn on" button to activate it.
- Once enabled, a detailed configuration panel will appear, allowing you to customize its behavior.
Configuring the Filter's Actions
This section defines what the Fraud Filter does when it detects a suspicious order.
a. Action
Select the primary action you want the filter to perform.
- Cancel order: (Recommended) When this is checked, the app will immediately and automatically cancel any order that meets your defined fraud criteria. This is the most effective way to stop a fraudulent transaction before it is fulfilled.
- Flag order: If you prefer to review orders manually, check this option. The app will mark the order with a "Fraud" tag in your Shopify admin but will not cancel it.
b. Manage filter
Fine-tune the filter's logic and post-cancellation processes here.
- Order Type: Choose the risk level that will trigger the filter.
- High-risk orders: The filter will only act on orders that Shopify's analysis identifies as "high risk."
- Medium-risk orders: The filter will also act on "medium risk" orders. Use this with caution, as some medium-risk orders may be legitimate.
- Inventory:
- Re-stock inventory after canceling the orders: When checked, items from a canceled order are automatically returned to your available stock, ensuring your inventory levels remain accurate.
- Order management:
- Delete the order immediately (only for COD orders): This option applies exclusively to Cash On Delivery orders. If enabled, fraudulent COD orders will be completely deleted from your order history to keep your records clean.
- Notification:
- Send cancellation confirmation email to customers: If checked, a cancellation email is sent to the email address on the order. You may want to disable this to avoid notifying the fraudster.
- Send cancellation notice to store owners: This option sends an email notification to you (the store owner) whenever an order is auto-canceled, keeping you informed of the filter's activity.
- Refund:
- Auto-refund when canceling the orders: If an order's payment has already been captured, this option will automatically process a full refund to the original payment method. This is critical for preventing chargebacks. If this option is disabled, you will need to process refunds manually.
Important Notes
- Plan Availability: This feature is available exclusively on the Enterprise and Shopify Plus plans.
- Plan Downgrades: If you enable this feature on a qualifying plan and later downgrade to a lower plan, the Fraud Filter will be automatically deactivated.
- Data Source: The fraud analysis data, including the Fraud Order Score and Order type (High/Medium risk), is provided directly by Shopify's internal systems.
- Manual Review for Refunds: If you choose to disable the "Auto-refund" option, we strongly recommend reviewing all automatically canceled orders before manually processing any refunds to ensure they are handled appropriately.
