Block disposable email

Block disposable email addresses

Overview

Disposable (or temporary) email addresses are one of the clearest signals of fraud. Real customers rarely use services like 10minutemailmailinator, or guerrillamail to place orders or sign up on your store — these emails are usually created to abuse promotions, bypass restrictions, or commit fraud.

Blockify protects your store by automatically detecting and blocking emails from these providers, so you don't have to add suspicious domains one by one.

How it works

Blockify maintains a list of 5,000+ known disposable email domains, sourced from a public, community-maintained dataset. The list is kept up to date automatically — you don't need to manage it.

When a visitor enters an email address at a protected point, Blockify checks the email's domain (the part after @) against this list. If there's a match, the visitor is blocked from completing the action.

**Important — what this feature does and doesn't do:**Blockify only checks the domain of an email address (the part after @) against the disposable list. It does not verify whether the email address actually exists — that's a separate process called email verification (e.g., sending an OTP or checking the mail server). For example:[email protected] → blocked (domain is on the disposable list, regardless of whether the address is real)[email protected] → not blocked (Gmail isn't a disposable provider, even if the address doesn't exist)

Where it applies

You can turn on disposable email blocking at two different points in your store:

1. Checkout

Blocks customers from completing checkout if they enter a disposable email address. This helps prevent fraudulent orders from fake emails.

Available on Shopify Plus.

2. Subscribe forms

Blocks visitors from submitting your newsletter signup form with a disposable email. This keeps your subscriber list clean and reduces spam submissions.

Available on Plus and Enterprise plans

Instructions

Turn on blocking at Checkout

Step 1: Go to the Block checkout page.

Step 2: In the Quick Setup section, tick the checkbox Block checkout from disposable or temporary email addresses.

Note about the error message: When a customer is blocked at checkout, the message shown on the checkout page uses the Error message configured in the Quick Setup section (default: "Order cannot be placed due to suspected fraud."). You can edit this message to match your store's tone.

Turn on blocking at Subscribe forms

Step 1: Go to the Settings tab → Mitigator.

Step 2: Find the Block disposable email addresses on subscribe forms section and toggle it to On.

FAQ

Q: Which plan do I need to use this feature?

A: Plan requirements depend on where you turn on the protection:

  • Checkout blocking — requires a Shopify Plus store.
  • Subscribe form blocking — available on Plus and Enterprise plans.

Q: Will this affect my existing customers or subscribers?

A: No. The check only applies to new orders, new account registrations, and new form submissions. Existing customers and subscribers are not affected.
