Multiple Language Limit

Multiple Languages Limit

Consentik is updating how many languages each plan supports. This guide explains the new limits, what they mean for your store, and what you need to do (if anything).

At a glance

Plan

Languages included

Free

1 (your store's default language only)

Plus

Up to 2 languages

Advanced

Up to 5 languages

Unlimited

No limit

How we count languages: Your total is published languages + unpublished languages. Turning a language on or off does not change your total β€” only adding or deleting a language does.

What changed

Previously, Advanced supported more than 5 languages for some stores. Going forward:

  • Plus is capped at 2 languages
  • Advanced is capped at 5 languages
  • Unlimited stays unlimited

If you're already on Advanced and currently have more than 5 languages, don't worry β€” you keep all of them. See Existing Advanced stores with 6+ languages below.

Adding a language

You can add a new language any time your total is below your plan's limit.

If you've hit your limit, the "Add language" button is disabled and you'll see one of these messages:

  • On Plus: Your plan supports up to 2 languages. Upgrade to add more.
  • On Advanced: Your plan supports up to 5 languages. Upgrade to Unlimited to add more.

To add more languages, either delete a language you no longer need or upgrade your plan.

Existing Advanced stores with 6+ languages

If your store is on Advanced and already has more than 5 languages, here's what applies to you:

βœ… You can keep every language you have β€” nothing gets deleted automatically. βœ… You can still publish, unpublish, edit, and delete any existing language. ❌ You cannot add new languages until your total drops to below 5. ⚠️ Once you go down to 5 or fewer languages, the 5-language cap applies from that point on. You can't go back above 5 while staying on Advanced.

You'll see this notice on the Languages page:

Advanced now supports up to 5 languages. You can keep your existing languages, but you can't add new ones unless you delete some languages or switch to Unlimited.

Want to add more languages? Upgrade to Unlimited.

Switching plans

When you change plans from the Pricing page, what happens depends on the direction.

Upgrading (e.g. Plus β†’ Advanced, Advanced β†’ Unlimited)

Straightforward β€” click Upgrade and confirm on Shopify's billing screen. You get the higher language limit right away.

Staying on your current plan

Your current plan shows Active plan instead of an upgrade button.

Downgrading to a lower paid plan (e.g. Unlimited β†’ Advanced, Advanced β†’ Plus)

Before the plan change goes through, we check that your current number of languages fits the new plan's limit.

πŸ“Έ Screenshot 4 β€” Pricing page showing plan cards with CTAs: "Active plan" on the current plan, "Upgrade" on higher plans, and "Choose Plus" / "Choose Advanced" on lower plans.

βœ… Your languages fit the new plan

You'll see a confirmation like this:

❌ Your languages exceed the new plan's limit

The plan change is blocked until you delete enough languages. You'll see:

Clicking Manage languages takes you to your Languages page so you can remove what you don't need, then come back and switch plans.

Downgrading to Free

Downgrading to Free works differently β€” there's no blocking popup. You confirm the downgrade through Shopify's standard billing flow, and once it takes effect:

  • Your store keeps only your default language
  • All translation data for non-default languages (banner text, cookie info, privacy popup, checkout copy) is permanently removed
  • The language selector on your storefront is turned off
  • The translation toggle is switched off
⚠️ Important: Language data deleted during a Free downgrade cannot be recovered. If you upgrade back to Plus, Advanced, or Unlimited later, you'll need to re-add your languages and re-enter translations manually.

What Free users can and can't do

Free plan can:

  • Edit translations for the store's default language (banner, cookie info, privacy popup, checkout text)

Free plan cannot:

  • Add any additional languages
  • Publish or unpublish languages
  • Turn the translation toggle on

To use multiple languages, upgrade to Plus, Advanced, or Unlimited.

Quick answers

Does unpublishing a language free up a slot? No. Both published and unpublished languages count toward your total. Only deleting a language frees up a slot.

I'm on Advanced with 7 languages. Will anything get deleted? No. Your existing languages stay. You just can't add new ones while you're above 5.

I downgraded to Free by mistake. Can I get my translations back? Unfortunately no β€” non-default language data is deleted as part of the Free downgrade and can't be restored. You'll need to re-add languages and translations after upgrading.

Where do I see how many languages I'm using? On the Languages settings page β€” the counter next to the "Add language" button shows your current total versus your plan's limit.
