Product Tracking Type for Pinterest Pixel (Product ID vs Variant ID)

The Product Tracking Type setting lets you control how Omega sends product identifiers (content_id) to Pinterest when customers view or interact with products on your store.

This setting is especially important if you run Pinterest Shopping Ads, Dynamic Ads, or Catalog-based campaigns, because Pinterest uses content_id to match website events with products in your catalog.

Choosing the correct tracking type helps ensure:

  • Accurate event attribution
  • Correct product or variant matching in ads
  • Better retargeting performance and ROAS

Why this matters

When a customer views a product on your website, Omega sends an event (such as ViewContent, AddToCart, or Checkout) to Pinterest.

Each event includes a content_id, which Pinterest uses to answer this question:

“Which product (or variant) did the customer interact with?”

If the content_id does not match your Pinterest Catalog structure, your Shopping Ads may:

  • Match the wrong item
  • Lose attribution
  • Perform worse than expected

This setting ensures your pixel data and catalog data stay aligned.

Available options

By default, tracking type is set to product_id by the app. To change the type, go to Settings section within the app and switch between product_id or variant_id.

1. Product ID

Track at the product level

When selected:

  • Omega sends Product ID as content_id
  • Pinterest tracks interactions at the main product level

Recommended if:

  • Your products have no variants, or
  • You advertise products without size, color, or style differentiation

Example:

  • Product: “Running Shoes”
  • All views and actions are tracked under one product ID

Pros:

  • Simple setup
  • Suitable for basic catalogs

Limitations:

  • Less accurate if products have multiple variants

Track at the exact variant level

When selected:

  • Omega sends Variant ID (e.g. size, color, style) as content_id
  • Pinterest tracks interactions for the exact item the customer viewed

Recommended if:

  • Products have multiple variants
  • You run Pinterest Shopping Ads or Dynamic Retargeting
  • You want the most accurate attribution and product matching

Example:

  • Product: “Running Shoes”
  • Variant: “Black – Size 42”
  • Pinterest tracks this exact variant, not just the parent product

Benefits:

  • More precise retargeting
  • Better catalog-to-event matching
  • Improved Shopping Ads performance

👉 Most merchants using Pinterest Shopping Ads should select Variant ID.
