Shipping protection

Overview

EDD Shipping protection lets you offer customers peace of mind at checkout by safeguarding their orders against delays, loss, or damage. Reduce claims, streamline operations, and create a new revenue stream - all within the same app.

Pricing methods

1. Percentage Pricing Method

When the Shipping Protection widget is enabled, the app automatically generates a Shipping Protection product with 100 variants (SKUs).

  • The first variant, priced at $1.00 by default, is reserved for the fixed price method. This value can be modified if you choose to apply fixed pricing.

  • The remaining 99 variants are used for the percentage pricing method. These variants are incrementally priced, starting at $1.00 and increasing by approximately $1.01, with the maximum price capped at $99.98

How it works

  1. The widget calculates the Shipping Protection fee based on the total cart value at checkout and the percentage rate you have configured.

  1. It then identifies the closest higher-priced variant from the Shipping Protection product list

Example:

  • Cart total: $60.00
  • Configured rate: 2%
  • Calculated fee: $1.2
  • The two closest variants are $1.00 and $2.01.
  • Since the widget always rounds up, the final displayed price will be $2.01.

Advanced Pricing Settings

When using the Percentage fee type, you can further customize the pricing structure by enabling Advanced Pricing Settings. This allows you to override the default variant setup and define your own minimum charge and increment amount.

Default

  • By default, the system creates 99 variants (SKUs) for percentage pricing.
  • The minimum charge is set to $1.00.
  • The increment amount is set to $1.01, which determines the price steps between each variant.
  • The maximum charge is capped at $99.98.

Customizing Advanced Settings

  1. Check the box “Use advanced pricing settings.”
  2. Enter your preferred values for:
  • Minimum charge – The lowest fee that will be applied, regardless of the cart value
  • Increment amount – The difference in price between two adjacent variants.

Example

  • Configuration:
    • Minimum charge: $3.99
    • Increment amount: $1.00
    • Protection fee: 2% of the cart total

  • Scenario 1:
    • Cart value: $50
    • Calculated fee: $1.00 (2% of $50)
    • Since this is lower than the minimum charge, the applied fee will be $3.99.

  • Scenario 2:
    • Cart value: $500
    • Calculated fee: $10.00 (2% of $500)
    • The two closest variants are $9.99 and $10.99.
    • The system always rounds up, so the final fee displayed to the customer will be $10.99.

2. Fixed Pricing Method

The Fixed Price method allows you to charge a single, universal protection fee for all orders, regardless of the cart value. When you select this method, the system automatically creates a new shipping protection product. The fee you enter in the Fixed amount field will be applied unless you configure advanced pricing rules.

Default

  • This value represents the universal protection fee that applies to all carts and checkouts.
  • If no tier rules are configured, this amount will always be charged.
  • Example: If you set the default fixed amount to $1.01, every order will be charged $1.01 for shipping protection unless it matches a custom tier rule.

Advanced Pricing Settings

By enabling Use advanced pricing settings, you can define custom tier rules that set different protection fees based on cart value ranges.

How it works:

  1. Min cart value: The minimum order value to apply the rule.
  2. Max cart value: The maximum order value to apply the rule.
  3. Protection price: The fixed shipping protection fee charged for orders within the specified range.

You may add multiple tier rules by clicking + Add.

Example

  • Default fixed amount: $1.01
  • Custom rule:
    • Cart value between $0 – $60 → Protection fee = $0.50
  • In this case:
    • If the customer’s cart is valued at $45 → the protection fee will be $0.50 (because it matches the tier rule).
    • If the cart is $120 → the protection fee will be $1.01 (because no tier rule matches, so the default amount is applied).

Rule Priority

  • If the cart value does not match any custom tier, the Default fixed amount will apply.
  • If the cart value falls into multiple tiers, the higher protection fee will be applied.

Cart page

1. Enable the widget

  • Click Enable under Show widget on the cart page.

  •  Note: Enabling this will auto-add a shipping protection product. Editing its variant manually in Shopify may cause incorrect fees.

2. Protection rules

  • Auto-Fulfillment: Shipping protection is a digital product, so it does not require shipping. You can choose:
    • Fulfill immediately after purchase.
    • Fulfill after the entire order is fulfilled.
    • Fulfill after the first order item is fulfilled.

  • Exclusions: Exclude shipping protection from:
    • Specific product.

    • Specific SKUs.

3. Widget appearance

Customize how the widget looks in the cart:

  • Templates:
    • Worry-Free Shipping
    • On-Time Promise

  • Widget display:
    • Icon: choose a default icon or upload your own.
    • Button Type:
      • Switch (toggle on/off).
      • Checkbox.
    • Button color (hex code supported).
  • Content:
    • Title (e.g., “Worry-Free Shipping”).
    • Description text (e.g., “Get a full refund if your order is lost, damaged, or stolen”).
    • Link to refund policy (optional).

  • Style Settings:
    • Text size, color, emphasis (bold/italic).

    • Widget size, color, emphasis.

    • Custom CSS (for advanced styling).

4. Advanced setup

  • Auto-translation: Manage and auto-translate your content into multiple languages in the Translation section

  • Custom positioning: Enter the appropriate selector where the widget should be placed in your cart

  • Checkout button selector:  Set up your custom theme’s checkout button selector to position the widget correctly

Checkout page

The setup steps on the checkout page are the same as on the cart page (Enable widget, Protection rules, Widget appearance)

Note:

On the checkout page, you must add the Shipping Protection widget by using “Add app block” in the Shopify Checkout Editor. Once the app block is added, you can customize its display and settings just like on the cart page.

If you move the block from its original position, the Estimated text will automatically switch to Shipping Protection.
