Billing Address condition

Billing Address conditions — Overview

Billing address conditions let you block or flag checkout orders based on the billing details a buyer enters — the information tied to their payment method, which can be different from the shipping address. You can build rules on the billing address, billing country, billing phone number, and whether the billing address matches the shipping address.
These conditions help you stop risky or mismatched orders. They run at the checkout step and apply across every payment method, including Shop Pay, Apple Pay, and Google Pay — not just the standard checkout form.

Availability

  • Shopify Plus: the full set of billing address conditions.
  • Other plans (Early Access): a starter set — Billing Address line 1, Billing country, Billing equals Shipping, and Billing phone number. This is rolling out as an Early Access feature. To switch it on for your store, message our support team and we'll enable it for you, free while it's in Early Access.

You'll see an Early Access tag on these conditions in the condition picker. After you pick one, the condition card shows a Message us to enable button until it's turned on for your store.

When to use billing conditions

Billing conditions are most useful when the shipping address alone isn't enough to protect your store:

  • You sell digital products or services. If you don't ship anything physical, there's no shipping address to build rules on — so billing details are your main signal for screening orders. Use Billing country or Billing Address line 1 to catch orders from locations or addresses you don't want to accept.
  • You want to catch card fraud. Fraudulent orders often use one person's payment details (billing) while shipping somewhere else. Use Billing equals Shipping to flag or block orders where the two addresses don't match.
  • You only sell to certain regions. Use Billing country to allow or block orders based on where the payment is coming from, independent of where it ships.
  • You require a phone number on file. Use Billing phone number to make sure the billing phone isn't empty before an order goes through.

What each condition checks

  • Billing Address line 1 — the street address on the billing address.
  • Billing country — the country on the billing address.
  • Billing phone number — the phone number on the billing address.
  • Billing equals Shipping — whether the billing and shipping addresses match. Build a rule that triggers when they don't match.

How to add a billing address condition

Step 1: Open Blockify Checkout in your Shopify admin and create or edit a checkout rule.
Step 2: In the IF block, click Choose condition (or + Add condition).
Step 3: Open the Billing address tab, or find Billing Address line 1 / Billing country in the Popular tab. You can also type in the search box.
Step 4: Click the condition you want. It's added to the rule and the condition card opens.
Step 5: Set the Trigger (for example, Is, Is not, Contains, Is empty) and enter the Value, then click Add.
Step 6: Finish the THEN action (block the order or show your error message), then Save.

Note: If a condition shows an Early Access tag and a Message us to enable button, it isn't active on your store yet. Send us a message and we'll switch it on — usually within a few hours.

FAQ

Q: Do billing conditions work with Shop Pay and express wallets? A: Yes. Billing rules are enforced on every payment method, including Shop Pay, Apple Pay, and Google Pay.
Q: Why are billing conditions only checked at checkout and not in the cart? A: The billing address isn't available until the buyer reaches the payment step. Checking earlier could block orders before the data exists, so these run at checkout only.
Q: What happens if a billing field is empty? A: An empty field won't accidentally trigger a block unless your rule is specifically set to catch empty values (for example, Is empty). Otherwise the rule only matches when the billing data meets your condition.
Q: The billing address is usually the same as shipping — how do I catch when they're different? A: Use the Billing equals Shipping condition and build a rule that triggers when the two addresses do not match.
Q: I'm not on Shopify Plus. Can I use billing conditions? A: Yes — you can use the Early Access starter set (Billing Address line 1, Billing country, Billing equals Shipping, and Billing phone number). Message our support team to have it enabled for your store.
