Block checkout access by IP, country or VPN (Shopify Plus)
Overview
Stop specific visitors from checking out, even while they can still browse your store. Block checkout access rules look at who is visiting and where they connect from as soon as the checkout page opens. They stop the checkout when the visitor matches an IP address, a location, a user agent (the visitor's browser and device information), an ISP (internet provider) or a VPN/Proxy. You set them up in Block Checkout > Block checkout access.

Requirement
How to create a Block checkout access rule?
Step 1: Choose what to block by
Go to Block Checkout > Block checkout access and click what you want to block by: IP address, Location, User agent, ISP or VPN/Proxy.

Step 2: Choose the rule type
On the Create rule screen select Block or Whitelist.
Rule type | Behaviour |
|---|---|
Block | Blockify stops the checkout when the visitor matches the value |
Whitelist | Blockify lets the checkout through when the visitor matches the value, even if a Block rule also matches |

Step 3: Enter the value and save
Enter the value to block or allow, write the Error message the shopper will see (empty = the default "Unfortunately, you won't be able to complete checkout"), add a private Note if you want, and click Save.

How it works?
Each option only differs in the value you enter:
Block by | Value | Example |
|---|---|---|
IP address | One IP address | 203.0.113.42 |
Location | A country | Nigeria |
User agent | Text from the visitor's browser and device information | HeadlessChrome |
ISP | An internet provider name | Example Hosting Ltd |
VPN/Proxy | Risk score starts at — how risky Blockify thinks the connection is, from 0 to 100; checkouts at this score or higher are blocked, and 0 blocks every VPN/Proxy IP. Tick iCloud Private Relay to include Safari users on Apple's relay | 70 |
Saved rules appear in the Block checkout access rule list, where you can turn each one on or off, edit it or delete it.

When a visitor matches a Block rule, the order is not created and the checkout page shows the message you configured.

Who can use this feature?
Available on the Shopify Plus plan.
FAQs
- What is the difference between this and a Block & Re-director rule?
A Block & Re-director rule stops the visitor from browsing the store at all. A Block checkout access rule lets them browse but stops them at checkout.
- A rule is saved but nothing happens at checkout.
Check that the Blockify - Checkout UI block is added with Allow app to block checkout ticked, that the rule is turned on, and that no Whitelist rule matches the same visitor. Then click Sync rules.
- Does blocking the checkout cancel orders that were already placed?
No. Access rules only stop new checkouts. Use Fraud Filters for orders that already exist.
