IP Country Conditions
Overview
Every other condition in Blockify Checkout works from information the buyer types in — their email, their address, their phone number. IP country conditions work from something they don't type: the country they are connecting from.
This lets you stop a pattern that address-based rules can't see. Someone using a stolen card usually enters the real cardholder's billing address, so the address looks perfectly normal. What gives them away is that they are placing the order from a completely different country.
There are three conditions:
- IP country: blocks buyers connecting from countries you choose.
- IP country does not match billing country: blocks when the buyer's location differs from the billing address they entered.
- IP country does not match shipping country: blocks when the buyer's location differs from the shipping address they entered.
Note: IP country conditions are available on the Shopify Plus plan only. If your store is on another plan, these conditions won't appear in your condition list.
When to Use Each Condition
The three conditions solve different problems. Picking the right one matters more than turning all of them on.
IP country
Use this when you already know which countries are causing you trouble and you want to keep them out entirely.
Keep in mind that this blocks everyone connecting from those countries — including customers who genuinely live there and want to buy from you. If you have real customers in a country you're about to block, use one of the comparison conditions instead, or combine this condition with something narrower.
IP country does not match billing country
This is the strongest signal for stolen-card orders. The card belongs to someone in one country; the person using it is somewhere else.
Use this if you sell high-value products internationally and chargebacks are a recurring cost.
IP country does not match shipping country
Use this if you keep receiving orders shipped to forwarding addresses abroad, or if orders placed from one country but delivered to another have been a problem for you.
Combining conditions suggestion
A location mismatch is not always fraud. People travel. People work on company VPNs. People live abroad from where their card was issued. If you block every mismatch, you will turn away real customers.
Most stores get better results by pairing a location condition with something that narrows it:
- Cart value: only block mismatches on orders above a certain amount. Small orders are rarely worth the risk of losing a genuine customer.
- Customer tag: skip customers you already trust, such as VIPs or repeat buyers.
- New customer: only block first-time buyers, since returning customers have already proven themselves.
- Product or collection: only protect the products that actually attract fraud.
Example: instead of blocking every order where the location doesn't match the billing address, block only those over $300 from customers without a vip tag. You keep almost all of your genuine orders and still stop the risky ones.
How to Set It Up
Step 1: Open Blockify Checkout from your Shopify admin.
Step 2: Go to Checkout rules and click Add new rule.

Step 3: Choose Checkout validation as the rule type, then give your rule a name so you can recognise it later — for example, "Block location mismatch on high-value orders".
Step 4: In the Condition section, click the condition row to open Choose condition.
Step 5: Pick the condition you want:
- IP country is at the top of the Popular tab.
- IP country does not match shipping country is under More views → Address.
- IP country does not match billing country is under More views → Billing Address.

Step 6: Set the values.
- For IP country, choose Is or Is not under Trigger, then select one or more countries under Value. Each country you add appears as a tag below the field.
- For the two comparison conditions, there is nothing to fill in. Trigger is fixed to Is different from and Value shows the field being compared. Blockify compares the two values for you.

Step 7: Click + Add condition to add a second condition that narrows the rule — cart value, customer tag, or new customer are good starting points. This step is optional, but recommended.
Step 8: In the THEN section, write the Error message buyers will see when they're blocked. Include a way to reach you, because some of the people who see this message will be genuine customers.
Step 9: Choose where the message appears using the Position field.
Step 10: Set Rule status to Active and click Save.
Your rule takes effect on your live checkout right away. You don't need to publish anything else.
What the Buyer Experiences
Buyers never see anything about location checks. There is no extra step and no noticeable delay at checkout.
If a rule matches, the buyer simply can't complete the order and sees the error message you wrote. When it doesn't match, checkout continues exactly as normal.
The moment the block happens depends on which condition you used:
- IP country applies as soon as the buyer reaches checkout.
- IP country does not match shipping country applies once the buyer has entered their shipping address.
- IP country does not match billing country applies once the buyer has entered their billing address at the payment step.
FAQ
Q: Which plan do I need? A: The Shopify Plus plan. On other plans these three conditions don't appear in the condition list.
Q: Will this stop all my chargebacks? A: No. These conditions catch orders placed with someone else's card from another country. They can't catch a genuine customer who receives their order and then disputes the charge — that person's location matches their address perfectly, so nothing looks unusual.
Q: How accurate is the country detection? A: Accurate at country level for the large majority of buyers. It can be wrong for people travelling, using a company network, or on some mobile networks. This is why we recommend pairing location conditions with a cart value threshold or a customer tag rather than blocking every mismatch.
Q: A real customer told me they were blocked. What should I do? A: Add a second condition to narrow the rule — for example, only block orders above a certain value, or skip customers with a tag you trust. You can also switch the rule to Draft while you adjust it.
Q: Can I combine these with my existing conditions? A: Yes. They work like any other condition and can be combined with AND / OR alongside cart value, customer tag, products, time of day, and the rest.
Q: I already block countries in Blockify Fraud Filter. Do I need this too? A: They do different jobs. Fraud Filter blocks a list of countries or IP addresses you decide in advance, across your whole store. These conditions compare the buyer's location against the address on the order, so they catch suspicious orders from countries you never thought to add to a list — and they let you apply the block only to certain orders instead of everyone.
Q: Do these conditions work with express checkout? A: Not reliably. Express checkout flows skip the steps we read the buyer's location from, so the rule won't apply to those orders.
Note: Changing a rule affects your live checkout as soon as you save. If you want to test wording or logic first, set Rule status to Draft, save, and switch it to Active when you're ready.
