Manage the Allowed bot list

Overview

Keep Google and social networks able to see your store while you block bad bots. The Allowed bot list is the set of trusted bots (Googlebot, Bingbot, Facebook link previews and so on) that Blockify always lets into your store, whatever your block rules say. This keeps your store showing in search results and keeps link previews working when people share your pages. You find it in Settings > Bot Mitigator.

What you'll learn

How to open the Allowed bot list?

Step 1: Go to Settings > Bot Mitigator.

Step 2: On the Allowed bot list card (its badge shows how many bots are allowed, for example 9 bots allowed), click Manage. The Manage Allowed Bots modal opens. Under some bot names, an "Includes …" line lists the related bots that entry covers (for example BingBot includes MSNBot and BingPreview); click Show all to see the full list.

Each row shows:

Column

What it shows

Bot name

The bot, for example Googlebot.

Resource

A link to the provider's own documentation for the bot.

Action

A switch that allows or blocks the bot, and a trash icon that removes it from the list.

How to add, block or remove a bot?

Add a bot

  1. Click Search bot at the top of the modal and type part of the name, or leave it empty to see every suggested bot. The modal shows "Showing X of Y" while a filter is active.
  2. Tick the bots you want to allow and click Add next to the search box. "Bot added successfully" confirms it.

Block or remove a bot

  • To block a bot but keep it listed, turn its Action switch off.
  • To remove it, click the trash icon. The bot is removed at once and "Bot removed" confirms it.

Note: Every change in the modal is saved as you make it. Click Close when you are done.

Request a new bot

If a bot you rely on is not suggested, click Request to allow a new bot here. at the bottom of the modal. Our team reviews your request and decides whether to add it.

How it works?

  • Blockify lets allowed bots in before it checks any of your block rules or Mitigator settings. A bot you remove or switch off is treated like any other visitor, so your rules can block it.
  • Visits from allowed bots are listed under the bot visitors view in Analytics, apart from your shopper numbers.

Who can use this feature?

Available on all plans.

FAQs

  1. Why should I allow bots at all?

Search engines and social networks visit your store to list your products in search results and to build link previews. Blocking them can push your store down in search results and break the previews of links people share.

  1. Will Googlebot be blocked by my country rule?

No. Blockify lets allowed bots in before it checks country, IP or VPN blocks, as long as the bot's Action switch is on.

  1. Can I allow a bot that is not suggested?

Use Request to allow a new bot here.. Meanwhile, you can allow its range of IP addresses in Block & Re-director > Whitelist.

  1. Does blocking a bot here create a rule in Block & Re-director?

No. It only stops Blockify from always letting that bot in. To block a bot by name, create a User agent rule; see Block or redirect by user agent.
