Returns MCP for AI assistant (Claude, ChatGPT, etc.)

Overview

Synctrack Returns lets you connect AI assistants directly to your store's return data using the open Model Context Protocol (MCP). Once connected, you can ask Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Grok, and other MCP-compatible assistants about your returns and exchanges in plain English — no SQL, no exports, no dashboards. Access is read-only and data is fetched live each time you ask.

What you'll learn

How to connect Claude (one-click)

Step 1: In your Shopify admin, open Synctrack Returns and go to Settings > AI Assistants (or Integrations > Claude, depending on your app version).

Step 2: On the Claude card, click Connect to Claude. This opens claude.ai in a new tab — sign in to Claude if prompted.

Step 3: Enter your store domain (your-store.myshopify.com) and click Continue to Shopify.

Step 4: On the consent screen, click Allow. You're redirected back to Synctrack Returns and the button now shows Disconnect with the connected Claude account.

Connect other AI assistants (manual)

The connector is built on the open Model Context Protocol (MCP), so any MCP-compatible assistant can connect — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Grok, and more. Claude is one-click; the others connect manually:

Step 1: Go to Settings > AI Assistants.

Step 2: Find the assistant you want (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Grok, or Other MCP-compatible AI) and click How to connect.

Step 3: Follow the on-screen instructions to add the Synctrack Returns connector in that assistant's settings.

What you can ask

Open your assistant and just ask in plain English — it recognizes return questions and fetches live data from Synctrack Returns automatically. For example:

  • "How many returns do I have this week, and what's the total refund amount?"
  • "What are the top return reasons last month?"
  • "Show me pending returns that haven't been approved yet."
  • "What's the status of return RDR-1024?"

Important: Access is read-only — the assistant can read and summarize your returns but cannot approve, reject, refund, or change anything. Those actions are still done in the Synctrack Returns admin.

Who can use this feature?

Available on all Synctrack Returns plans. You'll need an account with your AI assistant (for Claude, custom connectors require Claude Pro or above).

FAQs

  1. Which plans include the AI assistant connector?

It's included on all Synctrack Returns plans — no Synctrack upgrade needed. You'll need an account with your AI assistant; for Claude, custom connectors require Claude Pro or above.

  1. Do I need an API key or developer account?

No. Claude connects with a one-click, secure authorization from Settings > AI Assistants. Other MCP assistants follow their own connect steps — you never paste a manual API key.

  1. Can the assistant approve returns or issue refunds?

No. Access is read-only. Approvals, refunds, and policy changes are always done in the Synctrack Returns admin.

  1. Is my return data stored by the AI assistant?

No. Data is fetched live each time you ask — nothing is cached, exported, or stored on the assistant's side.

  1. What data can the assistant see?

Only your return and exchange data (orders, statuses, items, reasons, refund amounts, and the linked order number). It cannot see customer payment details or orders unrelated to returns.

  1. How do I disconnect?

For Claude, go to Settings > AI Assistants and click Disconnect — access is revoked immediately. For other assistants, remove the connector from that assistant's own settings.
