Shopify now taxes return shipping fees on US orders

Shopify tax on US return shipping fees

Overview

Starting October 23, 2026, Shopify charges tax on the return shipping fee for orders shipped to the United States. Synctrack Returns is already updated to match Shopify, so your refunds stay correct and customers are never taxed twice.

This applies only to stores using Shopify Tax (or Shopify's Tax Platform), and only in US states that tax shipping. Tax-exempt customers, orders shipped outside the US, and restocking, handling, return/exchange and label fees are not affected.

What you'll learn

What changes in your refunds?

The tax is taken from the customer's refund. Shopify shows it by lowering the Taxes line of the return, while the return shipping fee stays at the amount you set.

Example (New York, 8% tax):

Line

Before Oct 23

From Oct 23

Returned item

$629.95

$629.95

Taxes refunded

$50.39

$48.79

Return shipping fee

-$20.00

-$20.00

Customer receives

$660.34

$658.74

From October 23, the Taxes line is $50.39 - $1.60 = $48.79, where $1.60 is the 8% tax on the $20.00 return shipping fee.

What Synctrack Returns handles for you

  • Screens match Shopify. The return portal, request detail, review, create/edit request and refund screens show Taxes already reduced by the return shipping fee tax, and the fee without tax. Hover the ⓘ icon next to Taxes for an explanation.
  • Customers see the right refund before they submit. The tax is estimated by Shopify, so the expected refund in the portal matches what the customer receives.
  • Refunds are correct without extra steps. Manual refunds, automation/auto refund and Sidekick refunds use exactly the amount Shopify expects. The tax is never counted twice.
  • Your other fees are not taxed. For US orders, only the return shipping fee is sent to Shopify. Return/exchange fees and label fees are deducted by the app.
  • Other refund methods are handled. For gift card, discount code, bank transfer or "Mark as refunded", the customer gets the full product tax back, because Shopify doesn't charge this tax there.
  • Non-US orders and stores not using Shopify Tax work exactly as before.

What you should check

  1. Remove any manual tax you added to the return shipping fee. If you raised your fee (for example $20 → $21.60) to cover tax, set it back to the pre-tax amount in Settings > Fees. Otherwise customers pay the tax twice.
  2. Refund US returns inside Synctrack Returns. If you refund directly in Shopify Admin, Shopify doesn't deduct your return/exchange, label or restocking fees, so its default refund amount is too high. If you must refund in Shopify Admin, lower the amount manually by those fees.
  3. Update your own policy text if it says the return shipping fee is "tax free" or a fixed amount deducted from the refund.

FAQs

Why is "Taxes" lower than the product tax?
This is expected. Taxes = product tax minus the tax on the return shipping fee. The total refund is correct.

The estimate is a few cents different from the final refund. Why?
The portal uses Shopify's estimate when the customer submits. Shopify finalizes the tax at refund time (for example if the request was edited or your tax settings changed). Always treat the refund screen as the final number.

I refund to a gift card / discount code / bank transfer / "Mark as refunded". Why does the refund screen show the full product tax?
Shopify only charges this tax when money goes back through Shopify (original payment method or Shopify store credit). For other methods the customer gets the full product tax back, so the refund screen is correct even if the request detail shows a reduced Taxes line.

What about exchanges where the customer pays extra?
There's no refund step, so the return shipping fee, exchange fee and label fee stay combined on the Shopify invoice and Shopify taxes the combined amount (about $0.40 on $5 of fees at 8%). Nothing is required.

What about returns created before the app update?
Those returns sent all fees to Shopify as one combined return shipping fee. If refunded after October 23, Shopify may tax the whole amount, so the customer receives slightly less. Nothing is required; you can compensate the difference with store credit or a gift card.

Why do older refunds look different in refund history?
Refunds made before this update keep their original layout (full product tax, fee including its tax). The amounts are correct in both layouts.

My prices include tax. Why does Taxes show a small negative amount?
Product tax is already inside the item price, so Taxes can show the fee tax as a negative (for example −$1.60). The total refund is correct.

I don't see any tax on the return shipping fee yet.
Shopify may be rolling the change out gradually, and some orders have no tax (states that don't tax shipping, tax-exempt customers, stores not using Shopify Tax). The app picks it up automatically once Shopify charges it.

I refund through an integration (Open API). What changes?
If your system doesn't send an amount, the app calculates the correct one. If it sends its own amount or reads tax figures from us, note that for US orders the tax we return is the tax actually refunded (product tax minus the fee tax). Please let your developer know.
