Shopify Rule Storage Limit: What It Means and How to Fix It

Overview
Shopify sets a storage limit on how much rule configuration each checkout function can hold. This is separate from how many rules your Blockify Checkout plan lets you create. This limit applies to every merchant, on every plan, including Shopify Plus. When a rule group gets close to or reaches this limit, Blockify shows a warning in your admin so you can act before Shopify stops applying your rules at checkout. This article explains what the warning means, why it happens, and how to fix it.

Note: This is a Shopify platform limit, not a Blockify plan limit. Even on Premium, where you have unlimited active rules, this storage limit still applies. It's about how large your rule configuration is, not how many rules you have.

How the Limit Works
Blockify groups your rules into three storage categories, matching the Shopify checkout function they run on:

  • Checkout rules: rules built in Checkout validation
  • Payment customization rules: rules built in Payment customization
  • Delivery customization rules: rules built in Delivery customization and Shipping discount

Each group has its own separate storage limit set by Shopify. A rule with many condition values (for example, a list of 1,000+ email addresses) takes up more storage than a rule with a single value.

  • Below 80% usage: no warning shown.
  • 80–99% usage: a warning banner appears.
  • 100% or more: a critical banner appears, and Shopify stops applying that group's rules at checkout.

If multiple groups are near or over the limit at the same time, Blockify shows the banner for whichever group is using the most storage.
What Happens at 100%+
Reaching 100% doesn't block you from saving a rule, and it doesn't show an error from Shopify. Shopify simply stops reading that group's configuration, so every rule in that group stops applying at checkout without any warning from Shopify itself. Orders that should have been blocked, redirected, or customized go through as if no rule existed. Your rule is still saved in Blockify. It just isn't running.
How to Free Up Space
Step 1: Go to Blockify Checkout in your Shopify admin and open the rule group flagged in the banner (Checkout, Payment, or Delivery).
Step 2: Look for rules with long lists of values. Email addresses, phone numbers, zip codes, and other list type conditions are usually the biggest contributors to storage usage.
Step 3: Replace long value lists with a single customer tag condition where possible. A customer tag takes up far less storage than a list of hundreds or thousands of individual values.
Step 4: Turn off or delete rules you no longer use.
Step 5: If you're not sure where to start, click Chat with us on the banner. Our team will go through your rules with you and help you free up space, including converting a value list into a customer tag.

Note: In v1, converting a list into a customer tag is done together with our support team, not automatically inside the app.

Where You'll See This Warning

  • A banner on the Blockify Checkout dashboard and rule list, for the group closest to its limit.
  • A pop up right after you save a rule, if saving that rule puts its group at 100% or more. This appears everywhere you save a rule that shares this storage: Checkout validation, Payment customization, Delivery customization, and Shipping discount.

If your group is already at 100%+ and you save another rule in that group, even one that doesn't add to storage, you'll still see this pop up, because the rules in that group are still not running.
FAQ
Q: Does this affect how many rules I can create on my plan?
A: No. This limit is separate from your plan's rule allowance. On Premium, "Unlimited active rules" still applies. This warning is about the total size of your rule configuration, not the number of rules.
Q: Is this limit different for Shopify Plus?
A: No. The limit comes from Shopify and is the same across Free, Basic, Premium, and Plus.
Q: Will my rule fail to save if I'm over the limit?
A: No. Your rule saves successfully every time. What changes is whether Shopify applies it at checkout. Once a group is at 100%+, none of that group's rules run, even though they're saved.
Q: I dismissed the banner, will it come back?
A: You can dismiss the warning banner while usage is 80–99%. Once usage reaches 100%, the banner can't be dismissed, since your rules have stopped running.
Q: I'm below 80% now after deleting rules, will the warning show again?
A: No. Once usage drops back below 80%, the warning goes away.
