EU compliance: show the EU Legal Guarantee Notice
From 27 September 2026, traders selling goods to consumers in the EU must display the official legal guarantee notice. The EU compliance page turns that notice on across your store — product pages, cart, checkout and order emails — automatically translated into each buyer's language.

Where to find it
Open the app and click EU compliance in the left navigation.

Step 1: Turn the notice on
At the top of the page, click Turn on. The badge switches from Off to On and the setup guide appears.

Turning it on doesn't publish anything yet — the notice only appears once the app embed is enabled in Step 2.
Step 2: Enable the app embed (needed)
In the Setup guide, click Enable embed. Your theme editor opens on App embeds. Switch on S: Shipping protection (embed app) and click Save.
The app checks your theme automatically — once the embed is live, the step is ticked off and the progress bar updates.

Without the app embed, the notice will not appear anywhere on your storefront, no matter what else you configure. This is the most common reason a merchant sees nothing after turning the feature on.
Step 3: Add the notice to order emails (optional)
This step gives buyers a copy of the notice to keep. Click Add snippet and follow the instructions in the window:
- In your Shopify admin, go to Settings → Notifications.
- Open the email template you want to edit (for example Order confirmation).
- Paste the snippet at the bottom of the email body, before the closing tags.

Then click Done, I added it to tick the step off.
The snippet contains your current notice text and audience setting. If you later change either, copy the snippet again and replace it in your email templates.
How it looks for the buyer
The notice is a bordered card containing the official EU legal guarantee graphic in the buyer's language, a heading, a short reminder of the 2-year guarantee, and a link to the European Commission's Your Europe page. Buyers can click the graphic to open it full size.
It appears in these places:
Placement | Where exactly | Default |
|---|---|---|
Product page | Right below the add-to-cart form | Always on |
Cart page, cart drawer and cart popup | Right after the list of products | On |
Checkout | Above the Pay now button | Off (Shopify Plus only) |
Order emails | Wherever you paste the snippet | Off |

Placements
- Also show in cart and cart drawer — on by default. Shows the same card in your cart page, drawer and popup.
- Checkout — adds the reminder above the Pay now button. This checkbox is disabled unless your store is on Shopify Plus.

Who sees it
- EU/EEA buyers (default) — only buyers whose selected country is one of the 30 EU/EEA countries.
- All buyers — everyone, regardless of country.
The audience is based on the country the buyer selects in your store, so choose All buyers if your EU customers might shop in another market.
When EU/EEA buyers is selected, the app lists Your EU markets underneath. If your store has no EU/EEA market configured, a warning appears — the notice won't reach anyone until you add one in Settings → Markets in your Shopify admin.

Product page style
- Expanded (default) — the notice is open, graphic and text visible.
- Collapsed — only the heading shows; the buyer clicks to expand it. The cart notice follows the same choice.

Notice text
Click Edit to change the wording. Each language has three fields:

Field | What it is | Limit |
|---|---|---|
Heading | The title of the card | 120 characters |
Short reminder | The line summarising the guarantee | 120 characters |
Link text | The label of the Your Europe link | 120 characters |

Pick a language from the dropdown and edit only the ones you want to change — every language you don't touch keeps its official translation. Languages you've edited are marked, and Customize shows a summary such as "Custom in: Deutsch, Français". You can reset a language back to the default at any time.

The official EU graphic inside the card is never changed by your edits — only the heading, reminder line and link label around it.
Exclude products by tag
Add product tags here and the notice won't show for those products — on the product page, or in a cart where every remaining item is excluded.
These are excluded automatically, no tag needed:
- Gift cards (and products whose type is Gift card)
- Products that don't require shipping, such as digital downloads
- B2B buyers — customers shopping on behalf of a company, or tagged
b2b/wholesale

The 24 languages
The notice is translated into every official EU language: English, Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Irish, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish and Swedish.
The language comes from the one the buyer has selected in your store. If their language isn't on the list, the notice falls back to English.
Common scenarios
You sell to the EU from outside the EU
Turn the notice on and leave Who sees it on EU/EEA buyers. Buyers outside the EU/EEA see your store exactly as it is today.
You sell both consumer and wholesale
Nothing to configure — B2B buyers are excluded automatically. For wholesale products sold through your regular storefront, add their tag under Exclude products by tag.
Your catalogue is mostly digital
Downloads are excluded automatically because they don't require shipping. You can still turn the feature on for the physical part of your catalogue.
