Configure risk-based actions for fraud orders

Overview

Risk-based actions tells Blockify what to do when Shopify rates a new order as high or medium risk: cancel it for you, or flag it with a tag so your team can review it. You set each risk level separately. Blockify acts as soon as the order comes in, so you do not have to check every risky order by hand. The card sits under Fraud Filters once the feature is on.

What you'll learn

Requirement

Fraud Filters must be turned on. See A complete guide: Fraud Filters.

How to configure risk-based actions?

Step 1: Open Fraud Filters and turn on Risk-based actions. Two sections appear, High-risk orders and Medium-risk orders, and you set each one separately.

Step 2: Under Action, choose what Blockify does for that risk level.

Option

What it does

Cancel order automatically

Cancels the order in Shopify as soon as it comes in. You can restore it anytime from your Shopify admin.

Flag order

Leaves the order open and adds the Tag name you enter (default High risk order for high-risk orders, Medium risk order for medium-risk orders) to it in Shopify for your team to review.

High-risk orders

Medium-risk orders

Tip: Blockify recommends Cancel order automatically for high-risk orders and Flag order for medium-risk orders, because medium-risk orders more often turn out to be real customers.

Step 3: If you chose Cancel order automatically, tick the Cancellation options you want for every order cancelled at that risk level.

Option

What it does

Re-stock inventory

Returns the items on the cancelled order to available stock.

Auto-refund payment

Refunds money you have already collected, in full, to the customer's original payment method. Leave it off to refund by hand.

Send email to customer

Sends the cancellation email to the address on the order. Untick it to cancel without telling the customer.

Delete order (COD only)

For cash-on-delivery orders only: deletes the cancelled order from your Shopify order history.

Medium-risk orders

Step 4: Tick Notify store owner to get an email each time Blockify takes this action (you can tick it once you pick an Action). You choose who gets the email in Settings > General settings > Notifications — see Configure fraud order email notifications.

Step 5: Click Save.

How it works?

  • When a new order comes in, Blockify looks at the Order type Shopify gave it and takes the action you set for that risk level. Blockify never touches low-risk orders.
  • Blockify only does what you selected: Flag order cancels nothing, and Cancel order automatically uses only the cancellation options you ticked.
  • Blockify does not go back and cancel or flag orders placed before you turned the card on. Every order Blockify acts on shows its status under Action in Analytics > Orders.

Important: The Fraud order score and Order type come from Shopify's own fraud check. Blockify acts on Shopify's rating; it does not rate orders itself.

Important: If you turn Auto-refund payment off, review each automatically cancelled order before refunding it by hand.

Important: If you move to a plan that does not include Fraud Filters, Risk-based actions stop. Blockify keeps your settings for when you move back to a plan that includes them.

Who can use this feature?

Available on the Enterprise plan and above.

FAQs

  1. Can I cancel high-risk orders but only flag medium-risk ones?

Yes. Each risk level has its own Action, Cancellation options and Notify store owner setting.

  1. Will the customer know the order was cancelled?

Only if Send email to customer is ticked for that risk level.

  1. What happens to the payment on a cancelled order?

With Auto-refund payment on, money you have already collected is refunded in full. With it off, the order is cancelled but the money stays until you refund it in Shopify.

  1. Can I restore an order Blockify cancelled?

Yes. Open it in your Shopify admin and restore it like any other cancelled order.
