1. What exclusions do
When a variant is excluded, two things happen at once:
- It does not count toward the offer's condition. In a Buy 3, save 10% offer, an excluded item is not one of the 3.
- It does not receive the discount.
Your storefront widget also hides the discount for that variant, and the item is left out of any "add more to save" message.
If every product in an offer's scope ends up excluded, the widget stops showing anywhere — product page, collection page, and cart popup — and no discount applies.2. Turn on exclusions
- Open the offer you want to edit.
- Scroll past Discounted products to the Exclusions card.
- Check Exclude products from this campaign.
The card header shows a summary of your current setup, so you can see what is excluded without expanding it.

3. Choose an exclusion type
Pick one of four types:
Type | Use it to exclude |
|---|---|
Specific variants | Individual variants you choose by hand. |
Group products | Anything matching conditions you set, such as is already on sale. Updates itself as your catalog changes. |
Exclusions card expanded, showing the "Exclude products from this campaign" checkbox enabled and four radio tiles: Specific variants, Specific products, Specific collections, and Group products. | |
You can only use one type at a time. The four tiles are radio buttons, not checkboxes. |
Which tiles appear depends on what your offer targets:
Offer targets | Variants | Group |
|---|---|---|
All products | ✅ | ✅ |
Specific variants | — | ✅ |
Specific collections | ✅ | ✅ |
Specific products | ✅ | ✅ |
Group products | ✅ | ✅ |
4. Exclude specific variants
- Select Specific variants or Specific products.
- Click Add variants or Add products.
- Search for what you need, tick the items, and click Add.
- Remove anything you added by mistake with the delete icon on its row.
Add products modal with a search field at the top, a scrollable list of products with checkboxes, a selected count, and Add and Cancel buttons at the bottom.
Variant rows show the variant name and price. Product rows show the product name and All variants (n), because excluding a product excludes every variant under it.
These two types can be saved empty, so you can turn exclusions on and add items later.
5. Exclude a product group
A group excludes anything matching the conditions you set, and it re-checks itself as your catalog changes. This is the only type that keeps working without you editing the offer.
- Select Group products.
- Choose how conditions combine:
- Match all — a product is excluded only if it meets every condition.
- Match any — a product is excluded if it meets at least one condition.
- Click Add condition, then pick a field, an operator, and a value.
- Add more conditions as needed. Remove any row with its delete icon.

You need at least one complete condition to save. Otherwise you will see Add at least 1 condition.
Operators by field
Field | Operators |
|---|---|
Price | is greater than, is less than |
Compare-at price | has compare-at price, has no compare-at price |
SKU | equals |
Variant title | contains, not contains |
Compare-at price takes no value — the operator is the whole condition. |
7. Skip products that are already on sale
This is the most common reason to use a group. It stops your offer from stacking on top of a markdown you are already giving.
- In the Exclusions card, select Group products.
- Click Add condition.
- Set the field to Compare-at price.
- Set the operator to has compare-at price.
- Save the offer.
Group products condition builder with a single condition set to Compare-at price and the operator "has compare-at price", with helper text reading "Matches variants whose compare-at price is higher than their price."
Every variant currently on sale is now excluded — it will not count toward the offer and will not receive the discount.
A variant counts as on sale when its compare-at price is higher than its price. If the compare-at price is empty, equal to the price, or lower than the price, the variant is treated as not on sale and stays in the offer.
Use has no compare-at price for the opposite: run the offer only on products that are already discounted.
8. Which offer types support exclusions
Offer type | Exclusions |
|---|---|
Quantity breaks / Volume discount | ✅ |
One Discount | ✅ |
Order discount by value | ✅ |
Buy X Get Y | ✅ |
Product bundle, Single bundle, Bought Together, Build Your Own Bundle, Add-ons | — the Exclusions card does not appear |
Buy X Get Y works differently
A Buy X Get Y offer has two sides: the items the customer buys (X) and the reward they get (Y).
Exclusions only apply to the Buy X side. The reward is never excluded.
This is fixed behaviour and cannot be configured per side.
Example. Your offer is Buy 3 shirts, get 1 hat free, with on-sale products excluded.
- A shirt that is on sale does not count toward the 3 shirts.
- A hat that is on sale is still given away free.
If the same variant appears on both sides, it is judged as a Buy X item and given away normally as a Get Y reward.
9. Good to know
- Exclusions are available on every plan.
- Mixed carts work per variant. If a customer has one excluded variant and one eligible variant of the same product, the eligible one still counts and still gets the discount.
- Changing your offer's target can switch exclusions off. If you change what the offer targets and your saved exclusion type is no longer valid for it — for example a collection exclusion on an offer that no longer targets all products — the summary reads None active and no exclusion applies until you pick a valid type.
- Multiple currencies and B2B price lists are not evaluated. Conditions read the variant's base price and compare-at price in your store's default currency. If you sell through Shopify Markets or B2B catalogs, price and compare-at conditions may not behave as expected.
- Deleting a collection or product removes it from the offer's scope, so exclusions naturally stop referring to it.
