Rule Priority and Application Scope

Rule Priority and Application Scope

This document explains how Consentik – Product Watermark determines which rule is applied to a product when multiple rules match the same product.

Overview

In some cases, a single product may fall under multiple watermark rules at the same time. This can happen when rules are created with different application scopes, such as:

  • Rules applied to all products
  • Rules applied to specific products
  • Rules applied to specific collections

To avoid conflicts and ensure predictable behavior, the app follows a clear priority rule.

Rule Priority Logic

When a product matches multiple rules, the app applies the rule that was created or updated most recently.

This means:

  • A newer rule takes priority over older rules
  • Updating an existing rule moves it to the highest priority
  • The priority is based on the latest change time, not the rule scope

The application scope (all products, specific products, or specific collections) does not override this priority logic.

Example Scenario

A product belongs to:

  • A rule applied to all products
  • A rule applied to a specific collection
  • A rule applied directly to that specific product

If the collection rule was updated most recently, that rule will be applied to the product.

If the product-specific rule is later updated, it will then take priority and be applied instead.

Best Practices

To ensure the correct rule is applied:

  • Review rule update times when troubleshooting unexpected results
  • Update the intended rule last if multiple rules overlap
  • Avoid unnecessary overlap between rules when possible

Understanding this priority logic helps you manage complex rule setups more effectively and ensures consistent watermark behavior across your store.
