Target customers with segments and multiple tags

Reach the right shoppers by attaching a Shopify customer segment to a discount and by targeting several customer tags at once with match all or match any logic.

How it works

Target customer used to be a single dropdown that could only target by account identity and one tag at a time. Now you can also attach one Shopify customer segment (for example shoppers who have not purchased yet, repeat customers, email subscribers, or abandoned checkouts) as the audience of a discount, and you can list multiple tags with Match any or Match all logic.

Membership in a segment is decided by Shopify, using the segment's own definition. Your existing Customer type selector stays exactly as it is, and both conditions combine: a shopper must match both to get the discount.

Before you begin

  • This feature is available on all Pareto plans.
  • It applies to the Automatic discount method only. The Customer segment card does not appear for the Manual method.
  • Segments come from Shopify. Only Shopify default segments are listed. You can manage segments in your Shopify admin under Customers > Segments.

Target a customer segment

  1. Open a campaign in the editor using the Automatic method and scroll to Target customer.
  2. Open the new Customer segment card.
  3. Pick one Shopify default segment. The default is No segment, which keeps the audience the same as before.
  4. Note the reminder that membership is determined by Shopify's segment definition.
  5. Click Save. Pareto attaches the segment as the discount's audience and Shopify gates the discount to members at checkout.

If your store has no default segments yet, the picker shows only No segment with a link to create them in Shopify.

Target multiple customer tags

  1. In Target customer, choose a tag based type (with tags or without tags).
  2. In the tag field, type a tag and press Enter to add it as a chip. Add as many as you need. Remove a chip with its x, or press Backspace on the empty field to remove the last one.
  3. Choose the match logic: Match any (OR) qualifies a shopper who has any listed tag; Match all (AND) requires every listed tag.
  4. Click Save.

How segment and type work together

The segment (checked by Shopify) and the Customer type (checked by Pareto) are independent gates on the same discount. Both must pass. A shopper who is not a segment member never receives the discount, even if the tag logic passes, and the reverse is also true.

On the storefront, the widget confirms membership for a logged in customer before showing the offer. Guests, and anyone whose membership cannot be confirmed, do not see the offer.

Default segments options include: No segment, Customers who haven't purchased, Customers who have purchased more than once, Abandoned checkouts in the last 30 days, Email subscribers, Customers who have purchased at least once

Limitations

  • Only Shopify default segments are supported. Custom, merchant built segments are not available yet.
  • The Manual (draft order) discount method does not support segment targeting.
  • Membership follows Shopify's definition and is evaluated by Shopify, so there can be a short delay before a newly qualifying shopper is treated as a member.
  • The storefront widget hides the offer for guests and whenever membership cannot be confirmed.
  • A legacy campaign with a single tag keeps working exactly as before.
