Why duplicate campaign names stop your discount from working

If two campaigns share the exact same name, your discount may fail to run at checkout. This guide explains why duplicate names cause the problem and how to fix it in a few steps.

What happens when campaign names are duplicated

Pareto's Shopify discount function method creates a matching automatic discount inside Shopify for each campaign, and it uses the campaign name to identify that discount. When two campaigns carry the identical name, Shopify cannot tell the two discounts apart. The result is usually that one or both discounts fail to register correctly, so the offer does not apply on the product page, in the cart, or at checkout, even though the campaign looks active inside Pareto.

Why this breaks the discount

The campaign name is used as the reference that links your Pareto campaign to its automatic discount in Shopify. Shopify treats the name as an identifier, so it expects it to be unique. When the same name exists twice:

  • The second discount can overwrite or conflict with the first instead of creating a clean, separate entry.
  • Pareto may be unable to locate the correct discount to activate, update, or apply.
  • The campaign shows as active in Pareto while its discount is missing or broken in Shopify.

This is why a discount can appear fully set up yet never apply to an order.

How to check if you have duplicate names

  1. Open the Pareto app on Shopify and go to your Campaigns list.
  2. Scan the campaign names and look for any two entries with the exact same text, including spacing and capitalization.
  3. To confirm on the Shopify side, open your Shopify admin, go to Discounts, filter by Automatic, and check whether the expected discount is present and active for each campaign.

If a campaign is active in Pareto but its discount is missing in the Shopify Discounts list, a duplicate name is a likely cause.

How to fix it

  1. In Pareto, open one of the duplicated campaigns.
  2. Rename it to something unique and descriptive; for example, add the product, tier, or date, such as Summer Sale - Mugs instead of Summer Sale.
  3. Save the campaign.
  4. If the discount still does not apply after saving, deactivate and reactivate the campaign so Pareto recreates its discount in Shopify with the new name.
  5. Test the offer on the storefront to confirm the discount now applies.

Repeat for any other campaigns that share a name.

How to avoid it in the future

  • Give every campaign a unique name before saving.
  • Use a clear naming pattern that includes the offer, the products, and a date or tier, so names stay distinct as you add more campaigns.
  • Avoid copying a campaign without renaming it. Duplicating a campaign keeps the original name, which is a common source of this issue.
